What is a neuropsychological Exam?

Neuropsychological examinations are conducted for a number of reasons, but the focus is assessment of the brain and its functions. This can be helpful for those who have experienced injury or disease affecting the brain, for differential diagnosis, and to answer legal questions.

What does the exam look like?

The exam starts with a consultation with the neuropsychologist to learn background information, family and medical history, psychiatric contributions, and what symptoms a person is experiencing and causing difficulty. After the consultation, the patient then undergoes the evaluation which consists of paper/pen tests, questionnaires, answering various questions, and sometimes tests on a computer. These tests are interpreted using standardized scoring and administration. Areas of focus include focus/concentration, processing, problem solving, memory, and executive function, and behavioral factors.

How long is the exam?

This varies depending on the patient, but the consult is often 45 minutes, with a range of one to four hours of testing, and feedback of about 45 minutes.
